Author Arleen Alleman’s second book in the Darcy Farthing Series ‘Currents of Vengeance’ at book signing aboard cruise ship as Costa Cruises remains in headlines

Castle Rock, CO (PRWEB) February 19, 2012

In her Darcy Farthing mystery adventure series, author Arleen Alleman uses fiction to treat this series issue, bringing the unprosecuted crimes at sea to light through dynamic stories centered around her pragmatic protagonist, Darcy Farthing, and her adventures aboard the Sea Nymph. In the first novel, Currents Deep and Deadly, Darcy overhears a discussion of a murder for hire plot and members of the crew begin to die under circumstances that are nothing less than suspicious.

After confronting a vicious killer in the first novel, Darcy believes that all of the madness aboard cruise ships is behind her; however, nothing could be further from the truth. In Currents of Vengeance, Darcy and company return to the Sea Nymph to conduct a Government Accountability Office/FBI Congressional investigation of unprosecuted crimes on cruise ships. Their investigation hopes to bring ruthless Las Vegas casino owner, Paul Denezza, to justice after eluding prosecution for the violence on the previous cruise. In the second novel, Darcy will come face to face with even more madness.

While Alleman’s stories are both fictional, they both highlight the very real possibility of a ruthless killer eluding prosecution under the current laws. Currents Deep and Deadly and Currents of Vengeance not only entertain their readers, but they also call attention to the oft-overlooked issue of crimes at sea, making a serious case for significant change.

The Darcy Farthing Mystery Adventure Series

Alleman’s series centers around Darcy Farthing, a pragmatic woman in her forties, who readers were first introduced to in Currents Deep and Deadly. After coming face to face with a vicious murderer in the first novel, she wrote a book about the madness she confronted, which completely changed her life, both personally and financially. The third installment in this page-turning series, Current Assets, is slated for release in Autumn of 2012. To watch the book trailers, visit http://www.arleenalleman.com/trailer.htm.

Arleen Alleman

Arleen Alleman spent 21 years as an analyst for the Government Accountability Office. After retiring from the GAO, Alleman and her husband became avid cruisers, which inspired her to write stories set on cruise ships. In her two six-week cruises around Cape Horn; the first was spent writing her book and the second was spent doing book signings and promoting her books.
Campbell, California (PRWEB) January 11, 2012

Peelle Technologies, a leading provider of enterprise-class document management solutions, announced that Newark Housing Authority (NHA) is using Peelle Tech’s Online Waiting List Solution for its latest waiting list project.

NHA’s last waiting list project (2009) required citizens to pick up a paper application form from the NHA building and return it within 6 weeks. NHA collected 8,000 paper forms and hired temp workers to manually review each application, respond to applicants and then enter the data into their housing management application.

The process was labor-intensive and prone to data error due to illegible hand-writing and inaccurate data entry into the housing management application. With this latest waiting list cycle, NHA didn’t have the budget or staff to handle a paper-driven process again and searched for a better solution.

NHA does not open waiting lists that often and a typical waiting list is only open for a few weeks. Inez Smith, NHA Director of Occupancy, states, “With this latest waiting list project, we were looking for a partner that could oversee the project and also help us meet our HUD funding requirement to keep applicant data up-to-date.”

Peelle Tech enabled NHA to offer its citizens an easy-to-use multilingual applicant website. Applicants submitted their information on-line, avoiding the hassles of printing, hand-writing and mailing forms. Smith continues, “Peelle Tech’s solution was more secure, accurate and efficient than any process we had used in the past. Plus, the project helped us keep our applicant database up-to-date to meet HUD requirements.”

Housing Waiting List Management Applicant Portal Customized for NHA’s Requirements

NHA gathered all documents such as waiting list application forms, frequently asked questions and HUD-required information and collaborated with Peelle Tech on what information to put on the waiting list web-site and how to display it. Smith states, “Our goal was to offer an easy to navigate on-line site full of information to promote self-sufficiency. We also wanted to ensure that we complied with HUD requirements.”

The web-site Peelle Tech set up had a dedicated URL for NHA, used the NHA logo and the burgundy and green colors on NHA’s official web-site. Unique requirements for NHA such as large font sizes for the sight impaired and a page displaying a notice of reasonable accommodations for applicants with disabilities were built into the web-site. The site also featured an easy-to-click language control icon at the top, enabling users to switch between English and Spanish (Peelle Tech can translate sites to almost any language).

FAQs were included on the site’s home page along with a link to the on-line application form. Applicants could apply for the first available housing unit or select up to 3 specific property sites they were interested in. Smith states, “Giving applicants the option to select up to 3 of the 36 NHA property sites with check-boxes made it easy to validate the types of properties (e.g. townhouse or apartment) and locations of interest to the applicant. This information was automatically propagated to the online application form.” The on-line application form had required fields to ensure that all the necessary information was collected (versus paper forms where applicants may not write legibly or ignore certain fields).

Once the applicant applied, they received a confirmation number, validating that their form was successfully submitted. The NHA web-site was hosted at secure, redundant Peelle Tech data centers and all applicant data was submitted to systems managed by the Peelle Tech technical team. Smith states, “We were very comfortable knowing that Peelle Tech has an experienced technical team that has managed many waiting list projects before.

With Peelle Tech overseeing the IT infrastructure, we eliminated the need to find Newark IT resources and greatly reduced our risk of succumbing to security breaches or losing application data. This was important to us due to the private information our citizens were giving us.” The Peelle Tech data centers are SAS 70 compliant, having undergone 3rd party security and audit assessments.

Overwhelming Response: Two Weeks and 17,000 Applicants

NHA opened the on-line waiting list for two weeks and received an overwhelming response. Smith states, “We were expecting about 10,000 applicants, but 17,000 names came in. Given our staff and budget reductions, dealing with paper applications, crates of mail and manual data entry would have been impossible. I’ve been with NHA for over 25 years and the Peelle Tech online waiting list solution made our last process by far and away the easiest one we’ve ever been through.”

Applicant List Deduplication and Independent, Random Lottery Applicant Ranking

After the public housing waiting list solution was closed to the public, Peelle Tech worked with NHA to determine that Social Security Number and Date of Birth were to be used to deduplicate the applicant information. Peelle Tech sorted the information and kept the newest entry based on the time-date stamp. Once all duplicates were removed, Peelle Tech used a computer-based process to randomly rank the applicants. “Using a disinterested third party like Peelle Tech was a great way to rank the applicants in a fair way and it also reduced NHA staff requirements,” states Smith.

“The turnaround time for the waiting list data was only one week after the waiting list closed – that helped us respond to the applicants in a timely manner.”

Next Steps

NHA discovered that some of the applicants were already living in NHA housing units and re-applying to move somewhere else rather than going through the transfer process. NHA is working to remove these applicants from the waiting list while also consolidating its existing applicant data with this new waiting list applicant data. “We’ve been very happy with Peelle Tech; they’ve saved us a lot of time and effort as we work through our applicant database,” concludes Smith.

Bodoglife.com bookmakers have opened the lines for Thursday’s Game 1 with the Mavericks as 5-point favorites. Preseason lines for Dallas and Miami to win it all were 20/1 and 3/1, respectively.

With NBA coach of the year Avery Johnson at the helm and with a roster loaded with offensive talent, Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavericks will look to out duel the Heat’s dynamic duo of Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O’Neal.

Bettors who might be inclined to discount the Heat because of their 0-2 regular-season record against the Mavericks need to pay better attention to the way Shaq has been playing. O’Neal has avoided offensive fouls on his post moves and made smart and patient plays on the block. His performance in the postseason has only helped Wade, who is sure to be an important factor in the finals. Coming off a strong performance against the Detroit Pistons, Wade has seen his scoring average rise to 26.2 a game and shooting percentage increase to 50.9 percent.

“The Mavericks have the depth to play any style, and are certain to have good defensive matchups to counter the play of Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O’Neal,” says Calvin Ayre, Founder and CEO of Bodoglife.com. “The Heat, however, have proven to be a different team during the playoffs, and have demonstrated their desire to win the championship, so my guess is that this will be a long and exciting series. Bodoglife.com is happy to provide that little extra bit entertainment edge to a series that is shaping up to be one of the best yet.”

Along with the standard straight wagers, bettors can put their predictions to the test with Bodoglife.com’s more unique proposition wagers.

Who will be named the series MVP?

Dirk Nowitzki is favored at 5/7 odds, while Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O’Neil are at 2/1 and 3/1, respectively. Could NBA Finals history be made with the MVP honor being shared between two or more players? There is a good chance with odds sitting at 8/5.

Who will score more points in the series?

Dwyane Wade -115

Dirk Nowitzki -125

WACO, TEXAS (PRWEB) November 23, 2011

How did a famous Victorian poet’s ghost come to inhabit a university library in Central Texas? Why do artifacts from Bonnie and Clyde’s “death car” still move at a museum named for the famous early Texas lawmakers? Why is a ghost still searching for his arm in the downtown Waco area? Was a gambler really entombed sitting at a poker table with aces hidden up his sleeve?

Author Bradley Turner collected the tales and photographer Mark Burdine shot high-quality black and white photos of the present-day locations to make this beautiful 11×11-inch coffee table hardcover book, Cotton Bales, Goatmen & Witches: Legends from the Heart of Texas that made its holiday debut Nov. 22 at book retailers everywhere. “The most important aspect of the legends is not the events, places, or people described in the tales, but the stories themselves,” said Turner, who also wrote and compiled stories for his first book, Lust, Violence, Religion: Life in Historic Waco.

Turner compiled the tales after hearing stories all his life. “These are tales we don’t want to get lost,” said Turner. Already there are variations of the spooky tales that illuminate the darkest recesses of the Texas psyche from the distant past to the present day. Getting them together in one book preserves them for generations to come.

“If you’re thinking, ‘Hey, that’s in Texas!’ think again,” said Mark Long, publisher of the book at TSTC Publishing. “These stories could happen in your own state, your own city, your own neighborhood, your own backyard, your own house …you get the gist!”

The book retails for $ 34.95 and is available at major book retailers such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble. TSTC Publishing, established in 2004, is the publishing arm of the Texas State Technical College System, TSTC Publishing offers faculty throughout the country the opportunity to initiate and participate in a variety of book development projects. TSTC Publishing projects now include such ancillary products as instructor guides, student workbooks, CD-ROMs, DVDs, ebooks and companion websites.

Las Vegas, NV (Vocus) July 9, 2010

Paul “GiantBuddha” Hoppe, a fourth-degree black belt in taekwon-do and instructor at up-and-coming poker training site DragTheBar.com , combines the two disciplines in his new book, Way of the Poker Warrior. The book, which was published by Portland-based Imagine Media, LLC, will be released to the public today and is for sale at GiantBuddhaPoker.com.

Way of the Poker Warrior also includes forewords from DragTheBar.com CEO Hunter Bick and lead instructor Dusty “Leatherass” Schmidt. The book is already receiving rave reviews, including one from Poker News, which wrote, “Way of the Poker Warrior is a brilliant reminder on how to recapture the enthusiasm for learning poker wisdom that we all had when we started playing the game.”

Buyers of Hoppe’s book will receive a free 30-day trial on DragTheBar.com, the website also announced today.

Hoppe is both a Manhattan-based martial arts instructor and a highly successful mid-stakes Limit Holdem pro known for his work ethic, attention to detail and complete devotion to his two passions. In Way of the Poker Warrior, Hoppe applies one discipline to the other, detailing a remarkably clear-eyed approach to winning poker that he says he’s used to achieve acclaim and a six-figure income as a player and coach.

“The coolest thing about Paul’s book is that he manages to turn his theories into advice a poker player can use immediately,” Imagine Media CEO Scott Brown says. “This is not a book full of analogies and metaphors; it’s not vague kung-fu-speak. His advice is useful and real, and it’s written in a way that makes it incredibly practical and fun to read.”

Emphasizing discipline in preparation, play and conduct, Hoppe grounds his theories in hard-and-fast applications to the game, including 29 hand samples taken from Limit and No Limit Holdem, Pot Limit Omaha and multi-table tournaments.

Schmidt, a No-Limit pro whose own book, Treat Your Poker Like A Business, received worldwide acclaim earlier this year, said the advice in Hoppe’s book helped him reverse a slump that had him running $ 400,000 behind expected value over 28 months.

“My monthly income was plunging from $ 100,000 to zero,” Schmidt says. “Paul’s advice was so incredibly useful. He simplified things for me and suddenly it was clear what I was doing wrong: practicing ineffectively, playing too many hands, misjudging people’s ranges, playing emotionally, getting into spots I shouldn’t have … I was on autopilot, and at the same time I was miserable. He changed all that and got me back to enjoying poker again.”

Jared Tendler, a celebrated mental coach and DragTheBar.com instructor, says Hoppe’s book will be useful to amateurs and pros alike.

“Paul’s dedication, discipline and poise are a model for any player,” Tendler says, “especially established players looking to shore up bad habits.”

Hoppe says his goal was to simply make playing poker more profitable and enjoyable for his readers, and that the release of his book is the realization of a goal that’s been long in the making.

“I came up with the idea for the book almost 10 years ago, and I’ve dreamed of becoming a published author for almost 20 years,” Hoppe said. “Publishing my first book is truly a dream come true.”

Hoppe is perhaps most famous for his 2010 “Poker Grindathon,” a challenge he completed this spring during which he locked himself in his apartment building for 28 days, playing 80,000 hands and leveraging the publicity to raise money for charity. He says he applied the same single-mindedness to writing Way of the Poker Warrior.

“I throw everything I have into whatever it is I’m doing,” Hoppe said. “I wrote and revised the book in six weeks. I do my best work in marathon sprints.”

Bick says he hadn’t originally considered having a Limit Holdem component to DragTheBar.com when he founded the site two years ago, but a conversation with Hoppe convinced him otherwise.

“Paul got me to look at some of his previous coaching videos, which were brilliant,” Bick said. “He had a vision and wanted to be a part of creating something special, and that’s just what he’d done. Three months after he was hired, he’d made nearly 50 videos — the industry standard would have been around six. Now Limit Holdem is our second most-popular forum, and it’s all thanks to Paul.”

Hoppe is a fourth-degree black belt with Taekwon-Do International, which qualifies him as a “master.” He has taught martial arts for nine years — roughly as long as he’s been a black belt. For two years, he was the head instructor of a Dojang in Times Square.

As a poker professional, Hoppe is known for his detailed and efficient combo analysis. He first played live poker professionally from 1999-2000. This included $ 20/$ 40 Limit Holdem and Seven Card Stud, some Omaha 8 and Stud 8, and $ 5/$ 10 No Limit. After several years away from the game, he returned to poker in February 2006 with a $ 100 deposit bonus. He built his bankroll from that free $ 100 into a six-figure income, going from $ .50/$ 1 to $ 10/$ 20, $ 15/$ 30, and $ 30/$ 60, which he plays today.

Hoppe has maintained a very solid 1.5BB/100 win rate over the last 30 months. His Heads Up win rate is 5BB/100. In 2007, 2008 and 2009, he was able to double his poker income from the previous year. He’s known as a versatile player, mixing Limit, No Limit, Omaha, Stud, and Triple Draw.

He has coached poker for more than two years, including about 50 private students, and is an instructor at DragTheBar.com, for which he has made more than 50 poker videos.

Hoppe is in Las Vegas for the World Series of Poker, where he made it through Day 1 with $ 42,700 in chips and managed to bust Dan Shak, winner of the $ 100,000 buy-in event at the Aussie Millions. He’ll pick up where he left off when play resumes Saturday.

DragTheBar.com boasts affordable memberships and rakeback options at a variety of poker rooms. The site’s poker training videos and poker software are not digital-rights managed (no DRM) and are compatible with iPods and other MP3 players. Alongside poker, the site also offers backgammon, coached by world champion Bill Robertie.

There is no sign-up fee for joining DragTheBar.com, which has one membership level for all stakes and multiple payment options. The site is presently offering a 7-day free trial to all prospective members.

St. Johns, Antigua (PRWEB) March 18, 2009

With the 64 teams announced this weekend, office pools across America and around the world will be adding a little excitement to the US college basketball playoffs this month. But no one is putting up as perfect a prize for the perfect brackets as Intertops Sportsbook. Intertops March Madness Bracket will pay $ 25,000 for the perfect bracket. And perfect bracket or not, Intertops pays out.

For those that think it’s virtually impossible to predict all 64, if there is no perfect bracket Intertops will split the $ 25K prize among the best 25 tips. Full details are available at http://www.intertops.com/sportsbook.

One Intertops punter in particular is going to enjoy the Final Four championships in Detroit. In a random draw from all customers who bet on college hoops, Mike A. from Arizona won Intertops’ Final Four Prize Package just by betting on college basketball games during the season. One of Intertops’ biggest prize packages of the year, his Final Four all expenses paid trip includes four nights at a top hotel, upper level tickets to the Semi-Finals & Final Game and flights to Detroit.

Intertops, the very first sportsbook to take an online wager and still one of the most popular and trustworthy books in the world, is upping its deposit bonuses for March Madness wagering. There’ll be a 20% deposit bonus up to $ 200 until the 22nd and then again for the Final Four April 3rd to 6th.

They must be delirious with Big Dance excitement because Intertops is also doubling its loyalty program bonus points for all March Madness bets.

March Madness is the second biggest sports betting event of the year, second only to the Super Bowl.

Intertops affiliates should get March Madness promotional materials from Affiliate Manager Roman, recently named Sportsbook Affiliate Manager of the Year at the annual CAP Awards in London.

Hampshire, UK (PRWEB) December 3, 2008

In stark contrast to much of the entertainment and leisure sector, gambling via mobile phones will perform strongly in 2009, led by the UK market, according to research just released.

The Juniper Research report found that total wagers on mobile phones are expected to more than double in 2009 to more than $ 3.6bn, where as user spending on mobile TV and mobile games will be adversely impacted by the global economic downturn.

According to report author Dr Windsor Holden, “Gambling is essentially a recession-proof industry, as while there may be marginal reductions in the level of stakes amongst casual users, the overall appetite for gambling per se will be unaffected. Furthermore, with the growing availability of betting services on-portal, the mobile is an increasingly convenient and user-friendly means of placing a bet.”

The Juniper report also noted that the overwhelming majority of leading European bookmakers now offered some form of betting service on the mobile, with several having partnered with leading network operators.

However, the report noted that regulatory restrictions remained a key impediment to mass adoption, even in countries where mobile betting services were permitted, and argued that national and state governments needed to implement a clear and transparent framework governing all forms of mobile gambling services for the benefit of both consumers and service providers.

Other findings from the Juniper Research report include

Mobile betting will account for 75% of all gambling on mobile handsets in 2008, with casino-type gambling the second-largest sector
The UK alone will account for more than 30% of bets placed in 2008, although this proportion will decline to just 8% by 2013 due to increased deployment of services elsewhere
Global gross win from mobile betting services is expected to exceed $ 1bn annually by 2012

Juniper Research assesses the current and future status of mobile gambling market based on interviews, case studies and analysis from representatives of some of the leading organisations in the growing mobile gambling industry.

London (PRWEB UK) 27 January 2012

The great and the good of the global online gaming industry turned out in London this week to celebrate the achievements of the Gaming Intelligence Hot 50, the annual list of the most talented, innovative and inspiring individuals working in online gambling.

The Hot 50, as chosen by a panel of experts, includes entrepreneurs and CEOs, regulators, technology wizards, lawyers and marketers from across the globe, reflecting the diverse range of talent that is driving an incredible growth curve.

“We often write about the success of companies and their top executives, but the aim of the annual Hot 50 list is to recognise the achievements of all those who are shaping the future of this vibrant industry” said Bobby Mamudi, Managing Editor of Gaming Intelligence.

Growth in the online gambling industry is bucking the global economic trend with the GIQ20 quarterly ranking of the fastest growing listed companies in online gaming showing an average growth rate of 58.9 per cent during the third quarter of 2011.

The GIQ Hot 50 includes industry legends such as Denise and John Coates of Bet365 and Isai Scheinberg of PokerStars, influential regulators such as the UK Gambling Commission’s Jenny Williams, as well as relatively unknown talents such as Daniel Lindberg, the CEO of online casino supplier QuickSpin, which is yet to launch a product.

Andrew Bulloss, a Hot 50 judge and the head of betting and gaming at international headhunters Odgers Berndtson, commented: “The list of industry heroes, some well-known, some unsung, recognises how the industry has changed and the diversity of talent needed for success. The industry is becoming much deeper, broader and international as it moves into the mainstream.”

According to Global Betting and Gaming Consulting (GBGC), the world-wide gross gaming yield in 2011 is estimated at US$ 34.4bn. The UK generates nearly 14 per cent of this amount with US$ 2.5bn and UK citizens accounted for 40 per cent of the Hot 50. The next most represented nations are Sweden, Israel and Canada, representing the innovation centres that have shaped the industry thus far.

Note to Editors:

The Hot 50 will be published each January in GIQ, Gaming Intelligence’s quarterly magazine. It can also be found online at GamingIntelligence.com.

Nominees had to be employed in the online gaming industry or work for a supplier to the industry.

The GI Hot 50 panel of judges comprised:

● Warwick Bartlett, Chief Executive, Global Betting & Gaming Consultants

● Andrew Bulloss, Head of Betting & Gaming Practice, Odgers Berndtson

● Sigrid Ligné, Secretary General, European Gaming & Betting Association

● Bobby Mamudi, Managing Editor, Gaming Intelligence
